Through our trauma-informed approach, the programs at TBCH are designed to promote healing and strengthen relationships in the lives of both the single mothers and the children we serve. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we are able to offer therapeutic programs like our bi-monthly Express Yourself Groups. These groups allow Family Care moms and their children a chance to learn and reflect on past experiences through experimental activities. These groups give them an opportunity to express their thoughts, feelings, and emotions through an activity instead of words.

Express Yourself group activities are valuable to families because they serve as vehicles for personal expression and healing. The experience provides a process where the moms may safely express feelings in creative ways that are beyond words. For children, it allows kids to use play and activity to express themselves far better than they do with words due to their developing vocabulary. Express Yourself activities are valuable for the teens because it gives them a time to just be kids. They laugh and they get to be creative. They truly get to be themselves.

One most recent Express Yourself Group involved creating a decorative birdhouse. For many, this birdhouse represented a refuge of rest, provision, and protection. They spent time decorating their birdhouses and personalizing them in a unique way. At the end of the evening, each participant was able to share about their special creation and express what it meant to them. “My safe place is my cottage at TBCH,” shared one of the kids, “because it protects me like the birdhouse does the birds.” Through Express Yourself activities, families are able to communicate clearly and grow stronger!
